Ask an inSHAPE Trainer / No Excuse Tip of the Week: March 9, 2010

“Do you have any strategies for getting rid of the jiggle under my arms?

Lots of women develop a jiggle in their upper arm area as they age, so it's a great question. Unfortunately, females tend to store fat there, and genetics play a major role, but you can minimize the jiggle with a few moves and attention to your diet.

Try doing the following moves three times per week for a month and following standard recommendations for a healthier diet and you should definitely see an improvement in your arms, more tone and less flab!!

 - Push Ups with hands aligned directly under shoulders.  The closer your hands are together, the more you target the tricep muscle, the back of the arm, which is one muscle you must work consistently to avoid "saggy arms".
 - Dips.  This move also targets the triceps and is a great way to isolate that muscle.
 - Tricep kick backs with 5-8lb weights.  Lower yourself into a semi-squat position and lean a little forward at the hips.  Hold dumbbells in each hand with palms facing your body.  Your elbows will remain locked at your sides and you will extend your arms back until your elbow is almost straight and parallel to the ground.  Hold and squeeze for 2-3 seconds at the top of the move and slowly lower the weights back down.

For all three exercises do about 15 repetitions or until you feel a nice "burn" in the back of your arms.  In order to create a nice cut in the back of the arms you must also pay close attention to diet.  Steer clear of high fatty, high sugar foods and processed foods and try eating the majority of your calories of foods in their raw form.  This combination is sure to create the look you want before sleeveless- season begins.  Get started now - you don't even need sneakers on for these. Just drop down on the floor and make it happen.

No Excuse Tip of the Week: Go Military!
Outdoor Boot Camp classes have become wildly popular in the last couple of years. And for good reason: the workouts are intense but fun, they mix things up for otherwise boring workout routines, they get you outside, and the moves are pretty straightforward. The inSHAPE Boot Camp Spring Series will be starting the first week of April in both Cherry Lawn and Central Park. And this year we are setting the sessions up a little differently. The season will start at a beginner-level intensity and will progress to more challenging moves during the eight-week season, ending the week before Memorial Day (and just in time for swimsuit season).

Central Park Sessions: Tuesday mornings at 6:15 am. Meet at Columbus Circle. $150.
Our Central Park Spring Session will take place just once per week, on Tuesday mornings. Each week will present a unique and progressively more challenging routinue, and your instructor will provide you with a body-weight-only workout to do on your own for two other days during the week. Click on the link for more info and to register.

Cherry Lawn Sessions - look for the schedule in the next few days.
